The Roc de Peyre which dominates the Vallée de l'enfer (1180 m altitude) is a volcanic peak on which once stood the proud fortress of the barony of Peyre nicknamed "the eagle's nest". Reputed to be impregnable, it remained so until the 15th century and its destruction by Anne de Joyeuse, Duke and Admiral of France. This destruction came in response to the destruction perpetuated in Gévaudan by Mathieu Merle. A car park and a path have been built to facilitate access to the Roc. At its summit an orientation table allowing you to find your way in front of the breathtaking view has also been set up. Nothing remains of the old castle. The entire summit part is surrounded by a metal railing to prevent falls.
