PONT NOTRE-DAME

Civic building, History, Bridge in Mende
  • The Notre-Dame bridge, which spans the Lot, was for a long time the only stone bridge in the town of Mende. Built in the 13th century, this bridge with three arches gave access to the sunny hillside of Chaldecoste and beyond, to the road to Auvergne which is also the road to Paris. Its main vault measures 22 meters wide and 7 meters high. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1889. The Notre-Dame bridge, which spans the Lot, was for a long time the only stone bridge in the town of Mende. Built in the 13th century, this bridge with three arches gave access to the sunny hillside of Chaldecoste and beyond, to the road to Auvergne which is also the road to Paris. Its main vault measures 22 meters wide and 7 meters high. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1889. It was not until the 15th century that the Mende bridge or stone bridge became the Notre-Dame bridge because of a small chapel built on a fore-beak and dedicated to the Virgin . Unfortunately, this chapel has now disappeared. As for the bridge, it has always withstood the frequent and terrible floods of the Lot. Looking around you will notice several roofs a la Philibert Delorme, named after the 16th century architect who recorded their features. They are also called "boat hull" roofs. These roofs are typical of the upper Lot valley. You have the possibility of discovering by yourself a large part of the heritage of Mende. For this, we advise you to obtain the Heritage of Mende brochure which is available free of charge at the Tourist Office or to download .
