The Gallo-Roman mausoleum of Lanuéjols is one of the best preserved in Gaul along with that of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It was, without doubt, part of a set of three monuments. It is freely accessible at the entrance to the village of Lanuéjols. It was raised in memory of Lucius Pomponius Bassulus and Lucius Pomponius Balbinus by their parents. Judging by the quality of the architecture, Lucius Julius Bassianus must have been a magistrate or veteran of a Roman legion and a large landowner. The construction of this ensemble testifies to a desire to perpetuate the memory of their children but also testifies to their wealth and their adherence to the Roman cultural model. The composition of the building, its decoration, the style and content of the inscription as well as the archaeological material collected during the excavations allow us to place its construction in the third third of the 2nd century AD. The site was abandoned from the end of the 3rd century and gradually covered by alluvium which, burying it almost completely, allowed its conservation until today.
