LE LION DE BALSIEGES

Its name comes from its shape, depending on the angle from which it is observed, the profile of a lion emerges. Several legends are attached to him, the Balsièges lion is inscribed in legend and literature, as the father of a devastating polymorphic wolf killing shepherdesses and sheep in the Cévennes, as a lion frozen by the fear of shepherds' guns, as a lion transformed into stone for roaring and frightening a young woman. The Lion also has local importance, it is present on the coat of arms of the municipality of Balsièges. The coat of arms created in 2000, presents the different elements that characterize the town, the lion is the main protagonist. This proves the still current symbolic value of the site in the eyes of the inhabitants of Balsièges.
