EGLISE SAINT-PIERRE D'ALLENC

Religious building in Allenc
  • The church of Allenc became the property of the cathedral chapter of Mende in 1123. It is built of granite from the southern foothills of Margeride and has the particularity of being the only one, among the three churches of Gévaudan with a trefoil plan, to have preserved his three "leaves" from his bedside. The church was, however, destroyed from there during the Wars of Religion. Inside the building, the remains of a beautiful 18th century painted decoration, restored between 1987 and...
The church of Allenc became the property of the cathedral chapter of Mende in 1123. It is built of granite from the southern foothills of Margeride and has the particularity of being the only one, among the three churches of Gévaudan with a trefoil plan, to have preserved his three "leaves" from his bedside. The church was, however, destroyed from there during the Wars of Religion. Inside the building, the remains of a beautiful 18th century painted decoration, restored between 1987 and 1988, are still clearly visible. The decor was to illustrate the theme of Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four evangelists. However, here only the evangelists depicted on the barrel vault of the nave remain. Two beautiful sculpted capitals testify to the Romanesque construction of this sanctuary and a sculpted tombstone can be seen erected against the western wall inside the building. Its magnificent two-storey bell tower flanked by a staircase turret dates from the 19th century. The Pays d'art et d'histoire Mende et Lot en Gévaudan can offer you guided tours, depending on the program or by reservation. click to discover the circuit of Romanesque churches in the Land of Art and History
