CROIX EN PIERRE AU BORN

Religious building in Le Born
  • The village of Born has 3 stone crosses. Joseph Ignon reports a tradition that attributes these crosses to Jean du Born, a stonemason working on the cathedral of Mende in the 18th century. The village of Born has 3 stone crosses. Joseph Ignon reports a tradition that attributes these crosses to Jean du Born, a stonemason working on the cathedral of Mende in the 18th century. He would be the author of several other crosses in the neighboring municipalities. They are all characterized by the presence on one side of a Christ on the Cross and on the other of a Virgin in adoration. The first cross is located to the north of the village and dominates a vast panorama. Entirely in granite, its monolithic barrel is planted in a pyramidal base on which it is difficult to guess the date of 1739. The second is located in the center of the village, place de la Chape. More than three meters high, it has a slender and fluted barrel. The sculptures are very simple. On the base we read the date of erection: 1773. The third is located at the western exit of the village. Only one side is carved and bears a Christ on the Cross. The shaft and the base have been repaired. click to find other crosses from the Land of Art and History
