CHATEAU DE MONTIALOUX

Castles and defences in Saint-Bauzile

The oldest parts, the surrounding wall, the round tower of the lodge and the Saint-Jean chapel could date from the 12th century. The successive terraces on which it is built are perhaps an indication of the presence of a second enclosure. To the north is a square tower serving as a dovecote, to the east a covered passageway with a barrel vault leads to the entrance door to the courtyard. The large main building occupies the entire south side. The castle seems to have been inhabited until 1786. The lodge also bears signs of development from the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century, in particular the remains of a large staircase. It was already mentioned as being in ruins during a sale in 1932. PLEASE NOTE : despite the fact that access is quite easy, it is dangerous to enter the ruins. Furthermore, it is private property. The view of the Nize and Bramont valleys is however worth the effort to approach the site. The Pays d'art et d'histoire Mende et Lot en Gévaudan can offer you guided tours, according to the program or by reservation. click to find all the castles of the Pays d'art et d'histoire
