The Wars of Religion allow us to talk about the Château de Cougoussac, in fact in 1560, the owner of the Château, Gabrielle de Cheminade married the lord of Fontanilles, a member of a Protestant Cévennes family. This marriage may suggest that Cougoussac was a place of Protestant worship. The first war of religion (1562-1563) was stopped by the edict of Amboise on March 19, 1563. Consequently, François Calvet de Cheminade and his wife Gabrielle could practice their faith in their castle. In 1585 the castle was taken by the Catholic garrison of Mende, François Calvet de Fontanilles was assassinated. His daughter Marie married a Catholic lord in 1587. Following the Wars of Religion, Marie decided to build a chapel. The last descendant of the family, childless, sold the estate in 1849. Since 1906 the castle has belonged to the Rousset family. In 1986, Mr. Rousset obtained the classification of the site as a Historic Monument.
