Marvejols became "Royal City" in 1307 when Philippe IV le Bel made it his capital in Gévaudan. Fortified during the Hundred Years War, it converted to Protestantism in the 16th century and sided with Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV. Marvejols became "Royal City" in 1307 when Philippe IV le Bel made it his capital in Gévaudan. Fortified during the Hundred Years War, it converted to Protestantism in the 16th century and sided with Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV. Besieged by the troops of the Duke of Joyeuse, 3/4 of the population were massacred, the town burnt down and the fortifications destroyed... Recognizing Henri IV, the town was rebuilt in 1601. the three gates bear witness to this time of trouble .
