The chapel of the penitents was built in 1657 for the brotherhood of the White Penitents, a brotherhood founded in 1626. Its members recruited from first in the local high society, manifested their charity in various ways, in particular by financing burials for the poorest, helping the poor and destitute or financing and participating in large processions.
